In 1991, then known as ISE, we pioneered the use of Document Image Processing and continued to lead the way with Electronic Document Management (EDM) and Workflow. Client case studies have shown productivity improvements of around 25-30% with the introduction of these technologies. It is gratifying that EDM has become an accepted industry practice and that workflow, while a much misused and misunderstood term, is increasingly seen as crucially important by administration departments.
Not surprisingly, our pension administration system, Universal Pensions Management (UPM), broke the mould. It is also not surprising that its main aims should be to improve efficiency and flexibility for our clients and us and to reduce the difficulties involved in reacting to the constant change experienced by the pensions industry. We've achieved these aims by combining modern software-development techniques, a team of imaginative and highly motivated staff and the same willingness to innovate. Of course, it helps us significantly that we have the backing and resources of the Comino Group. Not only does this give us and our clients a corporate application framework, enabling our technologies and new approach to be easily applied across a wide range of requirements, but it also means that we have access to telecommunications expertise, application-hosting facilities, a high-bandwidth communications network, corporate helpdesk and support services, together with the strength and resolve which 250 staff can bring to bear.
So, exactly what is it that makes UPM stand out from the crowd? In a nutshell:
UPM is designed to allow administrative staff to concentrate on the important aspects of the case in hand, without having to sift through systems for relevant information.
It is designed to know how your scheme rules work and to prompt the administrator when unusual circumstances present themselves.
It ensures that the steps involved in your processes are followed to the letter and provides you with the necessary audit information to prove it.
UPM gives you the flexibility to change those processes, without waiting weeks for your system supplier or IT department.
It stores the complete results of all calculations, including the data and rules used to produce those results.
It looks after your data and stores complete information about every change made, whether or not the change has yet been approved.
It allows you to open up access to the system beyond the boundaries of your administration team, perhaps to the payroll and accounts departments, certainly to members themselves, maybe even to your scheme advisors.
It gives confidence and authority back to your staff.
